The late Reverend Ealis Sallie came to the town of Tracy, California, with the conviction in his heart to organize a Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Sallie obtained permission to hold afternoon services at the Church of God in Christ pastored by Elder Dawson. While visiting the home of Horace and Mamie Anderson at 111 West 3rd Street, he shared his vision and Horace Anderson (who did not attend church at the time) offered his home as a place to hold services.
On Sunday, December 7, 1947, Rev. Sallie held the first service in the Anderson home with five people in attendance (Rev. Sallie, his wife Elmo Sallie, Mother Ester Bivens, Horace Anderson and Mamie Anderson; later known as Mamie McKinney). Soon after, Horace Anderson became a Christian and a member of the church.
At the first meeting, Sis Mamie Anderson was asked to serve as Secretary and Treasurer. On December 14, 1947, the members agreed to the name “Rock West Missionary Baptist Church.” A few weeks later, Reverend EalisSallie was elected as its first pastor.
Church services were held in the Anderson home for approximately one year. As membership grew, land was purchased at 77 West First Street and later construction began on the church building.
On March 15, 1979, Rev. Ealis Sallie was called home. He had served as the only pastor of the Rock West Missionary Baptist Church for 31 years. Reverend Michael Bethea was ordained and accepted the call as pastor of the church on June 27, 1979. Rev. Bethea served the church for two years. On November 11, 1981, he resigned his pastorship.
Reverend David L. Jemison officially accepted the call to pastor the church on Sunday, January 3, 1982. Rev. Jemison told the church congregation that the Holy Spirit had given him a plan to lead, which included changing the name of the church to “Good News Missionary Baptist Church.” The name was changed on January 6, 1982. Rev. Jemison served until his resignation on September 2, 1984. On February 13, 1985, Good News Missionary Baptist Church called Reverend B. Carl Edwards as pastor and he accepted the call that same evening.
Over the past 31 years, there have been many accomplishments under Pastor Edwards’ leadership. New programs were born such as The Summer Series, New Member Class and The Bible Institute. In June 2003, the church chronicles were placed in the Tracy Historical Museum in an official ceremony and Good News MBC was recognized as the oldest African-American church in the city of Tracy. The Good News Bible Seminary held its first class in August 2011 and recently received its accreditation.
A parcel of land was purchased on Clover Road in Tracy, and later paid off. In 2013, the church mortgage balance was paid in full. In September of 2017, after 32 years of faithful service, Rev., Dr. B. Carl Edwards retired as pastor of the Good News Missionary Baptist Church. On March 3, 2018 after much prayer and consideration, Rev. Tyrone L. Morrison II was called to be the pastor of the Good News Missionary Baptist Church.
